Laguna Beach vs Marina (Varsity and JV)

Both Varsity and JV today played pretty well in our last league match of the year.  I saw some inspired golf as each girl wanted to end her season on a bang.   Both teams came up just a bit short as the Varsity lost 215 to 207 at Ben Browns, while the JVs were only able to play 6 holes at Meadowlark losing 161 to 172.  Like I said, close matches but just not good enough to get the wins.

In the Varsity match--one of our seniors (Sarah Hollinshead), who has been a 4 year Varsity starter, shot her best round of the year: 39.  She ended as our medalist and went out with a bang.  Big props to Sarah--something she will probably remember for a long time.

In the JV match, both Brooklyn and Jaden were playing well after 6 holes and ended up both shooting a 30 on a long, difficult course.  Had they been able to finish 9 holes and kept their pace, both would've ended up with 45s.  Great scores for a tough course like Meadowlark.

Varsity isn't done yet as we still have Pre-Lims on Tuesday but besides that, it's been an exciting and fun season!  Enjoy some photos and videos below from today's matches.

Varsity and JV vs Newport Harbor

First of all, I would like to give props to the JV team for competing down to the wire against Newport Harbor.  Last time the JV played NH, they came away with a one stroke victory.  This time they fell a little short shooting a 206 while NH shot a 201.  However, Brooklyn Conlon on a par 29 course (Lake Forest), shot her best round of the year coming in with a 33!!!  Abby Amish also shot her best round of the year: 38.  The future is bright in Laguna.

The Varsity, on the other hand, didn't capitalize on our recent momentum and took a few steps back today.  We played a super nice private course in Newport called Big Canyon Country Club.  The course plays a little long with occasional water hazards and out of bounds on both sides.  Our girls were not up to the challenge shooting a 276 while Newport shot a 213.  Maya Vidas, though, shot a great score on that course and was our medalist with a 47.

Unfortunately no pics/videos from the JV match this time.  Got a few from Varsity.  Some great scenic views.

Laguna Beach JV vs. Edison JV

The JV girls had a home match today against Edison at Ben Browns.  The girls did pretty well but as is the story in our new league, the other teams are just better.  We shot a 258 but Edison shot a 211.  Just to put that in perspective, our Varsity team the other day shot our best score in 9 years at Ben Browns and we would've beat Edison's JV by one stroke?!?  Crazy.

Anyway, we continue to battle the course and our own individual play trying to just improve shot by shot.  Brooklyn Conlon was our medalist today shooting a 47.  Have a great weekend!   Crazy to think that there are only two official matches left in the season. :(

Laguna Beach vs. Edison

We played the best team in our league today at Mile Square Golf Course.  We actually played pretty good shooting a 245 at a fairly long course but Edison shot a 199.  I was pleased with the girls' efforts especially Kenya Ripley Dunlap who shot her career low: 43.  This was highlighted by a 40 foot birdie putt on #8 with both coaches watching.  My only regret is that I didn't get it on video. :(

Anyway, we continue to make strides in the right direction.  Yes, some days are better than others but I see a lot of improvement over the course of the year both individually and team.  We play in one of the toughest golf leagues in Southern California that have schools with over 2,500 kids so the wins won't be there for us but that's what is so great about golf: We play against ourselves and the golf course and in that regard, we are winning!

Laguna Beach vs. Marina

A nail biter in the Varsity match today at Meadowlark Golf Course.  We matched up against Marina High School and we knew if we played decent it would be close.  We played decent and yes, it was close.  We ended up shooting a 242 but lost by two strokes as Marina came in with a 240.  :(

We had two girls tie for our medalist with low rounds of 46.  Abby Bekken and Kenya Ripley Dunlap.  I was especially proud of Abby as she filled in as our alternate when Gigi wasn't able to attend the match.  Not only did she play well but she shot her lowest score of the year and tied for lowest in the match.  Nice job Abby!

In the JV match, we lost 250 to 221 at Ben Browns.  Jaden, who hadn't played for a couple of weeks due to a sprained ankle, was our medalist shooting a 47 with Brooklyn right behind her with a 48.

Enjoy some videos below.  Unfortunately we were only able to get Jaden and Brooklyn from the JV match.

Laguna Beach vs. Newport Harbor

What a great day by both teams on the course.  My personal opinion is that today was our best day of the year on both levels.  First of all Varsity did not win but we shot our best score of the year coming in with a 210 at Ben Browns (previous low was 217).  Kenya was once again our medalist with a 39 but Maya shot a 40 and Gigi shot a 41 and Claire shot a 43.  All very good scores.  Newport Harbor is a great team and shot a 185 but I was very proud of the girls and their efforts today.

Just a few minutes ago, I got word that JV won by ONE STROKE.  Yes, one stroke over Newport Harbor's JV team 269-270.  The JV team played at Costa Mesa Country Club which is a full length course, par 36.  To win by one stroke is unbelievable and shows their fortitude and commitment to every hole and every shot.

I only have pictures/videos of the Varsity as it has been a late day for the JVs, getting home not too long ago.

Great job ladies!  We are improving each and every day and hopefully all the girls feel proud of their efforts!

Laguna Beach vs. Edison (Varsity and JV)

The Varsity played at Ben Browns today while the JV traveled to David L. Baker.  Both teams did pretty well but once again came up short to a better team.  Varsity shot their 2nd lowest score of the year with a 218 while Edison's Varsity girls shot an unbelievable 179.  Our JV team did pretty good too shooting a 234 while the JV Edison team shot a 200.

The Varsity medalists were: Sarah Hollinshead and Kenya Ripley Dunlap both shooting a 42 while the JV medalist was Brooklyn Conlon with a 43.
